An APVIA pledge campaign

Powering
the Islands

Stop the Fossil Fuel.

Island communities across the Asia Pacific still run on shipped-in diesel: expensive, polluting, and one late barge away from a blackout. Every island grid pledged here, from a village mini-grid to an interconnection between islands, replaces that fuel with sunlight.

What counts as a grid

  • Solar mini-grid
  • Solar + storage microgrid
  • Diesel-to-solar hybrid
  • Grid interconnection upgrade

The islands count

Every grid pledged here is a light coming on somewhere a diesel generator used to run. The count updates the moment a pledge is made.

The pledge

One pledge: an island grid

Rooftops light a house. A grid lights an island. Powering the Islands asks for the solar mini-grids, microgrids, hybrids and interconnections that let whole communities switch the diesel generator off for good. Tell us the capacity, the kind of grid and the islands it will serve, and it joins the count.

  • Solar mini-grid

A stand-alone solar plant and distribution lines for one island or village.

  • Solar + storage microgrid

Solar with batteries, so the island has power after sunset.

  • Diesel-to-solar hybrid

Solar and storage added to an existing diesel plant, cutting its running hours.

  • Grid interconnection upgrade

Cables, substations or controls that tie island grids together.

Three steps, about five minutes.

Why the islands

The last places still burning fuel for light

Mainland grids are already turning to solar. Islands are not, not because the sun is missing but because the pieces that turn sunlight into reliable power never arrived. Powering the Islands is APVIA’s campaign to bring them, one grid at a time.

Islands run on shipped-in diesel

Off-grid and island communities burn imported fuel for most of their power. It arrives by barge, costs far more than mainland electricity, and every litre of it is carbon.

One late delivery from the dark

A storm, a price spike or a delayed shipment and the generators stop. Solar on the island, backed by storage and a proper grid, is power that cannot be held up at sea.

The sun is already there

The Asia Pacific's islands have some of the best solar resource on Earth. What they lack is a grid to carry it: the plant, the storage and the lines that turn sunlight into power for a whole community. That is what a pledge is for.

How it works

From pledge to powered island

  • 1

    Choose the kind of grid

A solar mini-grid, a solar and storage microgrid, a diesel-to-solar hybrid or an interconnection upgrade.

  • 2

Tell us how much, and where

The capacity in kilowatts, how many islands or communities it will serve, and a date you will deliver by.

  • 3

It is counted, and we follow up

Your pledge becomes a light on the islands count, you get a receipt, and the Secretariat connects you with projects on the ground.
